New Divan 8 Submission Details:

(Announcement: 16 October 2009)

Our original extended deadline for Divan 8 has passed, but we have not received many submissions. We surmise this may be because possible contributors were waiting, understandably, on the publication of Divan 7. Now that we have finally published that issue and have made a commitment to avoid delays in the publication of further issues, we hope to receive more submissions from all of you. Accordingly, the deadline has been extended to 30 November. Those submissions already received will still be considered.

For the first time in the journal's eleven year history, we are calling for poetry dealing with a specific theme. Considering the way various cultures and societies are moving, the way the planet itself is changing, and the way science is pushing the boundaries of biology, genetics and computing, we feel that the theme of Mutant would help gather your thoughts about the world and stimulate your imaginations. If you are having trouble finding pieces that might fit the theme, remember that mutation can refer to content or form, to the human and its concerns about the future, as mentioned above, or the language used to express these and other more 'mundane' human concerns. Surprise us.

Please send up to 100 lines of unpublished poetry (Cyberpoetry is also welcome), along with a biography of up to 50 words. A head-and-shoulders photograph would be appreciated, but is optional. You can email your submission to e.livings@bhtafe.edu.au, or send them to

As I am contacted every now and then by overseas writers inquiring about submitting to Divan, I would like to remind interested poets that this journal only publishes the work of Australian poets, those born here or permanently settled here. This restriction was instituted for the first issue in order to encourage Australian poets at all levels of proficiency and is likely to remain the policy of the journal for the foreseeable future. Might I also remind possible contributors that 'unpublished' means not published in print or electronic form.

We look forward to seeing what you can come up with and thank you for your forbearance and perseverance.
